How to Open and Close the Mercedes-Benz Trunk and Adjust Its Opening Height

The trunk on a Mercedes-Benz is electronically operated. Instead of a manual lift, you open it by pressing the button hidden above the license plate, and close it by pressing the trunk’s close button.

For safety, you should never try to force the trunk open or shut by hand. Doing so can damage the mechanism, and since the trunk closes quickly under motor power, there’s also a risk of injury if you push against it. If the trunk seems to open lower than usual, don’t try to lift it manually—most likely the opening height limit has been set. This feature is especially useful in low-ceiling parking garages, where a fully raised trunk lid could hit the ceiling.

Below are the ways you can open, close, and adjust the trunk height.

Opening and Closing from the Trunk

  • Place your hand under the center of the trunk lid and press the switch to open it.
  • To close, press the button on the underside of the lid.

Since the trunk is powered, do not try to lift or push it by force.

Using the Smart Key

  • Press the trunk button on the smart key twice in a row to open or close it.

From the Driver’s Door

  • On the driver’s door panel, there’s a trunk switch.
  • Pull up and hold to open the trunk.
  • Push down and hold to close it.

Hands-Free Access

This particular vehicle does not have hands-free access. On models equipped with it, you can open the trunk by waving your foot under the rear bumper.

Setting the Trunk Opening Height

Lower setting

  1. On the display, press Home → Vehicle settings.
  2. In the top menu, select Vehicle → Trunk opening limit.
  3. When active, the trunk only opens halfway.

This is useful in low parking garages or when carrying tall items with the trunk partially open.

Higher setting

  1. Go to the same menu and turn Trunk opening limit off.
  2. The trunk will then open to its maximum height.

You can also adjust the height temporarily by controlling the trunk switch on the driver’s door, but this only applies for that single operation—it won’t save the height.
